Do I Really Need a Coach?

Do I really need a coach?

Good question.

It all depends on how good you are at introspection, objective evaluation of yourself, and making changes in your behavior. Some people can do it, while others cannot.

Life coaching has grown to be a multi-billion dollar business in the United States. I think there are several reasons for this. One, psychiatrists no longer actually do therapy for the most part. Instead, they see all behavioral issues as medical ones, so they prescribe drugs as treatment. That means they mask the symptoms, while leaving the actual underlying cause untreated.

Furthermore, there tends to be a stigma associated with seeing a therapist, especially if you're a man. So a lot of men resort to a life coach, which means they may or may not receive the actual help they need. If they have mild behavior issues, a coach may be able to help, but if they have serious psychopathology, a coach is not the right solution.

Of course, a coach who has integrity and enough diagnostic ability to know that a client has serious psychopathology will refer such a person to a qualified therapist, rather than trying to help through coaching. The problem is that pathology is not always easy to spot, even for trained therapists, so a coach may miss that realization.

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is considered to be the best executive coach in the U.S., and he has a book entitled What Got You Here Won't Get You There. In his book, Dr. Goldsmith lists the 20 odd behaviors that tend to be problems for individuals who are trying to climb the corporate ladder. These behaviors are all amenable to change through coaching. In this blog, I intend to offer online help to readers who have such issues.

If you can use a little boost here and there, and are able to see yourself objectively, then you may be able to "fix" such flaws. If not, we offer help for pay, and will be happy to offer you a no-cost 30 minute phone interview to determine if our services would be right for you. (Please note that we only work with clients in the U.S.)
